Common signs that your well pump may need repair include fluctuating water pressure, strange noises coming from your pressure tank.
The lifespan of a well pump can vary depending on the type of pump, the quality of installation, and the level of maintenance it receives. On average your pump should last 20-30 years. A broken pressure tank, too small of a pressure tank, incorrect installation, and lightning are all detrimental to your pump. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help extend the life of your well pump.
If your well pump stops working, first check the circuit breaker to ensure it hasn’t tripped. If you are qualified, you can check your pressure switch for the correct voltage. If it is a 240 volt system (most are) you can check for 240 volts on the two incoming wires with a voltage meter. Then you check for 240 volts on the two wires going out of the switch to the pump. There are 115 volt pump but your breaker to well should tell you if it's 115 or 240 volts system. If you have correct voltage on pump wires going out you have a deeper issue and should call a professional! (On some larger systems with a bigger square control box in between the pressure switch and pump there may be 2 red reset buttons on the bottom of the control box. A quick push may be all you need!)
In short, yes! Technology like PVC well casing and drop pipe have definitely decreased the amount of lightning strikes on pump systems over the years, but it still is a possibility!
Lightning can not only hurt your pump but it can also ruin your well. So if you are not for sure if your homeowner's insurance covers your well, we recommend you call them and check!
